Two Barcelona players could face each other for a World Cup 2026 berth

Many of FC Barcelona’s players were away on international duty with their respective nations as they looked to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup. The usual suspects like Spain, Portugal, Germany, France and England booked their berths for next year’s marquee event. One player who looked close to qualifying for the World Cup but failed to do so at the last minute is Andreas Christensen. Denmark suffered a demoralising defeat to Scotland to be pushed into the play-offs, where he joins Robert Lewandowski and Roony Bardghji. According to Mundo Deportivo, Lewandowski and Bardghji could end up facing each other for a potential 2026 World Cup berth. They have been paired on the same side of the draw and only one of them will make it to America, if at all. Poland face Albania at home in the semi-finals, while Sweden will have to overcome Ukraine. Should the two teams emerge victorious in their respective ties, it would result in a final between them and one of the two players would progress to the World Cup. Lewandowski and Roony are at opposite ends of their careers. This is likely to be the Pole’s last run at a World Cup. He will be 38 by the time the tournament comes around and will want to give his all to make it to the United States. Roony, on the other hand, is just breaking into the senior Sweden team. He is not a regular starter yet and, despite all the talent they have, the team have not been playing at a high level. The 20-year-old will hope to contribute in some capacity to lead his nation to the marquee tournament.

Liverpool want £120m ‘complete’ star to make Man Utd U-turn – Anfield audition imminent

Liverpool are interested in bringing Elliot Anderson to Anfield, according to a report, but sources have told TEAMtalk that the Nottingham Forest midfielder is keen on a move to Manchester United and working under manager Ruben Amorim. Anderson is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League and has gone to another level since leaving Newcastle United for Nottingham Forest in 2024. The 23-year-old England international midfielder has scored three goals and given seven assists in 56 appearances for the Tricky Trees so far in his career and is also very likely to turn out for the Three Lions at the 2026 World Cup finals next summer. Sources have told TEAMtalk’s transfer correspondent, Fraser Fletcher, that Elliot Anderson is Man Utd’s top midfield target in 2026. While Nottingham Forest are said to be demanding £120million (€136.3m, $157.6m) for Anderson, TEAMtalk understands that Man Utd are confident of striking a deal for the 23-year-old for half of that sum – 60m (€56.8m, $65.5m). Man Utd insiders have told us that Anderson himself would be “very keen” on a move to Old Trafford. Fletcher has reported that the former Newcastle star is ‘attracted by the opportunity to compete at the highest level and the chance to immerse himself in the prestige of a big six club’. We understand that Arsenal also have a liking for Anderson, who was described this month as “a very complete and mobile midfielder” by England manager Thomas Tuchel on BBC Sport. The Times has now reported that Liverpool, owned by Fenway Sports Group (FSG), are also keen on a 2026 deal for Anderson, ‘although they spent big on their midfield this summer’. The report has reported interest in Anderson from Man Utd and Newcastle United as well.

How Eberechi Eze to Arsenal changed Tottenham’s future forever

In the weeks before Daniel Levy left Tottenham Hotspur in September, a Premier League counterpart noticed something that ensured the shock departure wasn’t actually much of a surprise at all. They’d registered how Vivienne Lewis – the daughter of former Spurs owner Joe Lewis, whose shares have since been put in a family trust – was suddenly visible at games, “smiling and laughing”. Such conviviality was all the more conspicuous since many rival executives say they hadn’t actually met her. The feeling was: “It didn’t look good for Daniel.” Levy now isn’t seen at all, which will make a real change for the north London derby, right up to how former Arsenal CEO Vinai Venkatesham is now at Spurs. The refreshed hierarchy is set to be greeted by the increasingly prominent Josh Kroenke, son of Arsenal owner Stan. It won’t just be a first meeting of new leadership teams across north London, as both clubs coincidentally made huge changes at the same time. It might also herald a more significant shift in English football. The billionaires have already taken over. Now it’s the time for the billionaires’ children. And while football clubs have obviously been passed down through wealthy families before - not least Arsenal’s Hill-Woods - the very ownership rules ensured it wasn’t the same. Even Manchester United are different, since Malcolm Glazer’s children made decisions at Manchester United from the start.

With West Ham offer already in, player compared to a young Ricardo Carvalho

Earlier this week, Gazzetta dello Sport reported West Ham have already made an €18m offer for Lecce’s Tiago Gabriel. The Italian club rejected the offer, with Juventus now keeping an eye on the centre-back. It remains to be seen if West Ham with a bigger bid, but big praise has now arrived for the Portuguese defender. TuttoJuve have spoken to Filipe Martins, who coached Gabriel at Estrela Amadora. Asked directly about Juve’s interest in the 20-year-old, Martins said: “The news didn’t surprise me at all, because Tiago is doing a great job at Lecce and with the Under-21 national team. He has a great mentality and great quality, a move to a bigger club would make perfect sense.” The coach also compared Gabriel to Portuguese legend Ricardo Carvalho, who played for Chelsea and Real Madrid among others.

Cole Palmer To Miss Chelsea's Games vs Barcelona and Arsenal After Freak Injury

Chelsea playmaker Cole Palmer – who has been the Blues' talisman since moving from Manchester City in the summer of 2023 – is set to face another spell on the sidelines after fracturing his toe in an accident at home. He is set to miss Premier League matches against Arsenal and Burnley and against Barcelona in the Champions League. Palmer, 23 and widely regarded as one of the best penalty takers in world football, had just about returned to training after a prolonged spell away from action thanks to a groin injury, which has restricted him to just three Premier League appearances this season. Back in September, he was forced off after just 21 minutes against Manchester United. Having dedicated a lot of his time in recent weeks to making a full recovery, Stamford Bridge boss Enzo Maresca was hopeful that Palmer – who has scored 45 goals and provided 29 assists in 101 games for the west Londoners since his arrival – would be back in contention for what will be their hardest three-match run since the start of the campaign.

How Mbappé's Real Madrid start compares to Ronaldo, Benzema, more

Kylian Mbappé has reached 75 games with Real Madrid and is in his best form since joining the club, but he still has a long way to go when compared some of Madrid's most historic goal scorers. Mbappé is the standout player on Xabi Alonso's team and his goals are the reason why they are top of LaLiga and in the top eight of the UEFA Champions League's league phase. The 26-year-old France captain is the top scorer in LaLiga, with 13 goals, and the second-highest scorer in the Champions League, with five. However, he has had a slight dip in an otherwise impressive scoring streak as he has gone two games in a row without scoring, against Liverpool and Rayo Vallecano. Mbappé did get on the scoresheet in his most-recent match, scoring two in France's 4-0 win over Ukraine on Nov. 13 before withdrawing from the squad the following day. However, he is expected to be fit for Madrid's trip to Elche on Sunday. Mbappé's goal tally puts him near the top of Real Madrid's all-time scoring charts when it comes to his first 75 games at the club, surpassing Karim Benzema, equalling Hugo Sánchez, and putting him closely behind Ronaldo Nazário and Cristiano Ronaldo. The 26-year-old has scored 62 goals in those 75 games, helping the team achieve a record of 52 wins, six draws, and 17 losses. Among those games are 14 in which he has scored two or more goals, and four hat tricks. All of this has been spread out over 6,140 minutes of play. However, Mbappé has yet to make his mark in big games since arriving from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024. With him on their side, Los Blancos have only beaten Barcelona once (although he did score the opening goal in that 2-1 win last month) and have lost El Clásico four times. Against Atlético Madrid, they have one win, one draw, and two losses. Benzema can't beat Mbappé in terms of goals or minutes, but he did participate in better results for Los Blancos against Barcelona and Atlético in his first 75 games at the club. Benzema scored 30 goals in that period after arriving from Lyon in 2009, had two hat tricks and seven games in which he scored two or more goals, and played 4,042 minutes. He was also on the winning side against Atleti in all of his first four derbis and did not lose to Barcelona, accumulating one win and one draw against Madrid's biggest rivals. His overall record is 55 wins, 13 draws, and 17 losses at the start of his 14 years at the club, which ended with him leaving for Saudi side Al Ittihad as the reigning holder of the Ballon d'Or. Hugo Sánchez scored 49 goals in his first 75 games at Madrid (in 6,645 minutes of game time), fewer than Mbappé's 62 but a very respectable tally for the time. The Mexico great is at a disadvantage in terms of hat tricks (three, compared to Mbappé's four) and games with two or more goals (11 vs. 13). His record stands at 47 wins, 14 draws, and 14 losses in his first 75 games since signing from Atleti in 1985, and he beat his former club twice and drew once against them, with no defeats in the derby. In El Clásico, he recorded one draw, one loss, and one win.
